Nation, the time has come.
The polls opened moments ago.
I'm not going to wax philosophical about the nature of democracy. I'm not going to post pictures of dead soldiers who died so you can go vote.
I'm going to appeal to your lizard-brain... go vote, because it's in your best interest.
There is no level of government that has a more direct impact on your day-to-day life than the municipal government. Make sure you have a say in how that government is comprised.
Read up on the candidates.
Make your decision.
And then VOTE.
Not sure where to vote? Go HERE.
Reminder: Listen to CBC Radio One, 1010 AM or 99.1 FM in Calgary, starting at 8 pm for analysis and election results as they come. I will TRY to be blogging then, but you never know - I might be otherwise occupied.
I just wanted to drop you a line to say a huge THANKS for your Calgary municipal election coverage, and I'll be reading your site with great intent in the future. Well done.
Ditto for me. Good on you for providing this service. Municipal coverage is poor at the best of times. And you can almost forget about getting info on school trustees.
Which to me is odd. Who is responsible for negotiating collective agreements with teachers? Answer: trustees. And who do we blame for strikes? Answer: provincial government.
Ridiculous. We should spend far more time scrutinizing who is writing this particular cheque. Not that I am for forbidding this practice, but some trustees are former teachers. While they would have first-hand knowledge of the system, it is also true that their retirement benefits are often indexed to some items in current teacher contract negotiations. To say there is a conflict of interest, is to state the obvious.
Never mind getting a good competition of people running... we can barely get people out to vote. Getting good information out is a good first step.
Thanks for this site. I am a resident of Ward 3 and a lesser political junkie.
Ms Larocque's blaming of her staff of the communication problems between her and the community association smacks of laziness and lack of leadership.
I too am impressed with the job you've done here (having just stumbled upon it thanks to Bart).
Well done. Did you have plugs for mayor?
